Arrowhead 135 Mile Winter Ultra Marathon by iKeLikEsBiKeS

For Minnesotans wanting a nice couple days on the bike, polar bears or other insane athletes the Arrowhead 135 is less than 3 weeks away. If you are not familiar with the race it starts in International Falls, MN often fondly referred to as the “Icebox of the Nation” with average temps that start in the negatives. All the fun starts at 7AM on Monday February 1st when Runners, Cyclists or Skiers try to cover the fridid, snow covered 135 mile Arrowhead Trail to Lake Vermillion, Tower, MN in under 60 hours. In 2009, Terry Brannick won the bike category in 21 hours. Other bike finishers came in between 26-53hrs.

Racers must be carry 15 lbs at all times that includes a -20 degree sleeping bag, bivy or tent, food, stove, fuel and other critical items winter travel items.

Highlights from the 2009 Arrowhead 135 included:
Temps at the start were about -5F degrees and at night dropped to -34Fdegrees in Tower and probably 5 degrees colder on the trail.

Of 59 starters, 24 finished the Arrowhead in under 60 hours and 1 was disqualified for getting lost and taking a car ride back to the trail.

26 bikers started, 15 finished.
26 on foot, 8 finished
7 skiers, 1 finished.

For those readers who think that they can handle this level of extreme temperature endurance racing please keep in mind that for the cycling category you must have completed on of the following qualifying activities:

· Officially finishing a previous edition of the Arrowhead.
· Officially finishing a 24 hour bike race, on mountain trail or road, with a minimum of 150 miles completed for off-road, or 300 miles on road.
· Officially finishing the Susitna 100 or a similar type of winter event.
· Officially finishing an endurance mountain bike race of 100 miles minimum within the time allowed.
